Testimonial

I wish to express my appreciation to Mr Darren Smith and his sister Ms Tracey Smith who set up this supported accommodation for mentally ill people. They have made an enormous difference to our son and ourselves.

Our son Andrew has had a rocky life with his mental problems, which caused us tremendous stress and made difficulties for the housing department of Sheffield council. However, owing to excellent long term help from his support co-ordinator, Mr Rob Foster, Andrew’s symptoms are now well controlled and he is quiet and well behaved. Last year Andrew had an accident which caused spinal damage so that he cannot walk and is confined to a wheel chair.

With the help of Mr Foster, a place was found for our son at C4J Housing, 158 High Street. It was the first time that the staff had had to deal with physical as well as mental illness. They made great efforts to help Andrew to cope with multiple problems and stood up for him at every stage. Mr Smith installed a wet room so that Andrew can shower himself without help.

The C4J staff:

Went beyond their remit to show compassion and thoughtfulness. I cannot praise them enough. Andrew is happy for the first time in his life. He feels safe and supported, which is very important, as most mentally ill people are vulnerable. In addition he is able to access a small Elim church nearby, in Queen Street, using a taxi which is not too expensive.

The church folk have welcomed him warmly. Also I am able to access the home easily by train and bus so that I can visit my son every week on a day trip. My husband and I, plus father-in-law, used to live in Mosborough until we retired in 2004. I worked for the DWP at Eastern Avenue Job-centre Plus.

I do commend the directors of C4J to you; they really understand and care about the unimaginable sufferings of mentally ill people. It is an exhausting and sometimes thankless task, which they do very well and they deserve recognition.
